I am so looking forward to participating in the Gezira International Contemporary Photography Month in Cairo Egypt.
The event will feature images from twelve photographers from around the world, including an extensive solo hanging of work by renowned Egyptian photographer Ayman Lotfy.
Ayman Lotfy
I met Ayman in China while attending Photography Biennials in Jinan in 2008 and 2010. He is a compassionate and interesting person whose vision of the human form has a unique Egyptian feel.
It is an honor to have my images presented by the Egyptian Ministry of Culture. National ambassodors from several different nations will be coming to the opening on February 1.
If you are in Cairo during February, please take the opportunity to see the exhibit at the Gezira Art Center.

If you are in the area, stop by for a fun evening of imagery and everything photography. Special thanks, as always, to the Canon Explorers of Light program, which makes these events possible.

I plead guilty to having too much fun shooting boats. Check out the action on Narraagansett Bay. The combination of wind, salt spray blowing everywhere, a spectacular gathering of classic yachts, just lights my rockets.

Some technical data which you might find useful: Canon 1DMK4 with 100-400mm lens, ISO 640 ( I am shooting from a rocking boat, so shutter speed needs to be around 1/2000). Processed using PS and NIK software.

It seems just about everywhere I go there is a bridal shoot. The deal is the bride's rent the gowns for one month, which explains why the gowns get trashed in the dirt and the salt water on beaches. Then the bridal pictures are ready for the wedding....

There was a time when the phone was the New New Thing. While we are all so enthralled with our iPhones, iPads and great digital gadgets, there will be a time when they will be recycled on street corners. Enjoy these scenes from Hanoi...

It is said that the national bird of the New China is the crane....
They are a nation of builders. Construction on a massive scale in virtually every city every where. Millions of people building highways, bridges, skyscrapers, modern apartments. Untold number of trees and bushes planted. Looming around every street corner is another pill of steel and concrete waiting to become a towering sky scraper.

How do I get my first job? Starting a career is arguably one of the hardest things to do. Finding work without years of experience and the Rolodex that comes with it can be a daunting task. Be prepared for lots of rejections and long hours. As an aside if you want to go far in any creative endeavor (film, photography, graphic design, music, etc.) be ready to face rejection every single day. Students and recent graduates can often find only low paying jobs and even then they have to fight to justify their rates. Finding the first good job can be a painful process.
One way to get out of this laborious slough is to connect with art directors. Developing working relationships with art directors is crucial. Art directors just like photographers are freelance and as such are only as good as their last job. Meaning they need to continue to put out quality content just like you. Without that they will be out of a job. So it is understandable that art directors are hesitant to take risks on a photographer with limited experience. Art directors need to trust you and know that you can deliver. So how do you convince an art director to trust you?
Well a good portfolio never hurt but these days art directors and agencies are flooded with portfolios and mailers from hopeful photographers. Pro Bono. When working on a pro bono job, the stakes are typically much lower and art directors are allowed much greater creative freedom to do what they want. Art directors are also more willing to take risks, like hiring an inexperience photographer that seems really excited about the project. It is through these pro bono jobs that photographers can meet and build relationships with art directors so that the next time they are working on a project and need to hire a photographer, they know who you are. Also volunteering our time is good karma and something that shouldn’t stop once our careers have progressed out of their infancy.

Walking the beach here in Sanya, one of the first things you notice are the numbers of cameras. Everyone is shooting with something....big cameras and mobile phones...
Not only are there a number of bride and groom shootings, right at the water where there seems to be no regard for the effect of salt on the wedding dress, but women often hire photographers to take pictures of themselves so that they can remember their "youth"....entertaining to watch the instruction of non-professional talent...

A few weeks ago I had the oppurtunity to speak at the Center for Digital Imaging Art in Waltham, MA. I had an unbelievably good time and I just want to take this opportunity thank everyone that made it possible. For those of you who missed it you can find the presentation in its entirety
here or if you do not have two full hours to spare just take a look at the embedded video above. I am heading to China on Friday and will be feeding updates to the blog as often as possible.
